Silver wood is approximately 10 acres of chestnut coppice and oak standards with a large amount of secondary growth silver birch. Our plans for the wood are to open up and maintain the rides, to allow a no-intervention zone alongside the boundary with the field and to reintroduce coppice cycle where possible. We have in the last few years coppiced two small areas and scalloped one of the rides through the wood and were rewarded by extensive ground level growth and a noticeable increase in invertebrates including white admiral butterflies and dragonflies in the woodlot itself whereas previously these had been limited to the main ride running from north to south gates.

Wood that we have coppiced is used as firewood, converted to charcoal and in various craft projects from candlesticks to chairs. We plan to provide wood to Silva Energy over the coming years for biomass conversion.
